Compression Decisions: Control the Dynamics, Not the Life
Compression is where most mixes go wrong because it's where most producers try to fix everything. A vocal that jumps out too much gets compressed. A drum bus that lacks punch gets compressed. A bass that's uneven gets compressed. By the time you're done, the mix has no dynamic range, no energy, and no life.
The decision to compress should always start with a question: What am I trying to control? If the answer is "everything," you're using the wrong tool. Compression controls dynamic range. It makes the loud parts quieter and the quiet parts louder. That's useful when a vocal has a verse that sits at one level and a chorus that jumps three decibels higher. It's useful when a bass note rings out unevenly because of a fret buzz or a finger placement issue. It's useful when a drum bus needs the snare to sit more consistently in the pocket.
But compression is not useful when you apply it because you think a mix needs compression. Not every track needs it. Not every bus needs it. Not every mix needs a compressor on the master. Choosing not to compress is just as valid as choosing to compress, and often it's the better call.
When you do compress, use your ears, not your eyes. A 2 dB gain reduction on a vocal might sound perfect. A 6 dB gain reduction might sound crushed. The number doesn't matter. What matters is whether the track still breathes. If you can hear the compressor working, it's probably working too hard. Set the threshold so it catches the loudest peaks and leaves everything else alone. You want control, not a stranglehold.
The other compression decision that often gets overlooked is the release time. A fast release makes the compressor reset quickly, which can add punch but also pump. A slow release smooths things out but can make the track feel sluggish. There's no right answer. Listen to how the track responds. If the compressor creates artifacts you don't want, adjust the release. If the track feels flat, try a faster release to let the transients through. Compression is a feel decision, not a math decision.
