Using buses is not about looking professional. It's about making your mix decisions easier and more effective. Group your drums to a drum bus. Group your background vocals to a vocal bus. Group your guitars to a guitar bus. Now you can compress the drum bus to glue the kit together. You can EQ the vocal bus to remove low-end rumble from all the background parts at once. Routing also gives you the ability to create parallel processing chains. Send your drum bus to a parallel compressor and blend it in. Now you have the punch of the uncompressed drums mixed with the thickness of the compressed drums. You didn't have to choose one or the other. You got both.

The routing decision that most producers skip is the send bus for reverb and delay. Instead of adding reverb directly to a track, send the track to a reverb bus. Now you control how much reverb each track gets, and you can EQ the reverb bus to remove low frequencies that would muddy the mix. The same reverb can work on the vocal, the snare, and the guitar, and you only have to set it up once. That's not just efficient. It's cohesive. The reverb sounds consistent across all the tracks, which makes the mix feel like one piece of music instead of a collection of separate parts.
