Instead, ask yourself: does this track actually need compression? A well-played acoustic guitar part with consistent dynamics might not need any. A vocal performance where the verse is whisper-quiet and the chorus is belting? That needs compression. When you do use compression, start with a ratio of 2:1 or 3:1. Set the threshold so you get 2 to 4 dB of gain reduction on the loudest parts. Adjust the attack so the transient gets through (attack around 10-30 ms for drums, faster for vocals). Now you can compress the entire drum group together, add a touch of parallel compression for punch, and control the overall drum level with one fader. Do the same for your guitars, your synths, your background vocals. The benefit is huge: you can balance the entire mix with eight or ten faders instead of forty. Routing also affects your reverb and delay decisions. Instead of putting reverb directly on individual tracks, create a reverb bus and send multiple tracks to it. This keeps your reverb consistent across the mix. All your vocals, snares, and synths share the same reverb space, which makes the mix sound cohesive. The same goes for delay. One delay bus, multiple sends. Now you can adjust how much reverb or delay each track gets without touching the effect itself. This is also where gain staging becomes critical again. Make sure your bus levels are not clipping. If your drum bus peaks at -6 dB and you add compression, you have headroom. If it peaks at 0 dB, you are already in trouble. Listen in your car. Each playback system reveals something different. The goal is not to make the mix sound perfect on every system-that is impossible. The goal is to make the mix translate. Your kick should thump on a club system and still be audible on phone speakers. Your vocal should cut through on a car stereo and still sit sweetly on studio monitors. This is where all your mixing decisions pay off. The balance you set, the EQ cuts you made, the compression that controlled the dynamics, the routing that kept everything organized, the reverb that created depth-all of it serves one purpose: revealing the song. When you get it right, the listener does not think about the mix. They feel the emotion. They hear the vocal. They tap their foot to the groove. The mix becomes invisible.
