You've now automated level, filter, effects, and pan. The final step is to revisit volume-but this time with a different goal. Earlier, level rides shaped the overall dynamic arc. Now volume automation emphasizes specific moments and maintains energy across the entire track.
Identify the most important hits in your arrangement: the kick on the one, the snare on the three, the vocal phrase that lands the hook. Automate a quick 1 dB boost on those hits, lasting only a few milliseconds. This is called spot automation. It's not a compressor; it's a manual, intentional lift that makes those moments pop. The listener doesn't hear the volume change-they just feel the emphasis.
For longer sections, use volume automation to create energy waves. In a chorus that repeats four times, automate a gradual 0.5 dB lift across the entire chorus section, then drop back down for the next verse. The chorus feels bigger each time, even though the arrangement is identical. This follows the same principle as the level ride from step one, but applied at a smaller scale-phrase by phrase instead of section by section.
One practical sequence: automate the volume of a drum bus to rise 1 dB over the first half of a build, then drop 2 dB right before the drop. The drop hits harder because the volume dip creates anticipation.
